The buzz around UFC’s historic White House card is growing louder by the day, but Dana White just threw a splash of cold water on one fighter’s plans to be front and center—Jon Jones.
The idea of a UFC event on the White House lawn, timed with America’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026, took off after former President Donald Trump’s announcement. It was bold. It was theatrical. And unsurprisingly, it ignited the imagination of the fight world. From Conor McGregor to Nate Diaz, fighters flooded social media with pleas to be booked. But none have been as vocal—or as ambitious—as Jon Jones, who teased that this could be the moment that brings him out of retirement.
But don’t cue the comeback music just yet.
Speaking backstage after UFC 318, Dana White was cautious—measured in a way that’s rare when he talks about blockbuster fights. “It’s not even about him winning the belt,” White said when asked about Jones. “You know how I felt about him. You know I can’t risk putting him in big positions in a big spot and have something go wrong—especially the White House card.”
The comment sort of give weight to rumors that Jon Jones was nicely retired rather than fired.
Jones’ résumé in the Octagon is unparalleled. But his record outside of it? Marred by chaos. UFC 200 still looms large—a card that was supposed to be a landmark moment headlined by Jones vs. Cormier, until Jones was yanked during fight week after a USADA violation.
However, everybody still has bad taste in their mouth after the Aspinall drama, and the last thing Dana needs is his epic White House card falling apart due to Jon Jones.
Jones responded to the comments, saying he was disappointed.
“I heard the comments made at last night’s press conference. While I was a little disappointed, I’m still in the UFC’s drug testing pool, staying sharp, and continuing to train like a professional. I’ll be ready for whatever comes next,” he said.
“In a recent interview, I shared that the opportunity to fight at the White House gave me something deeper to fight for, a ‘why’ that goes beyond paychecks or belts. Fighting for my country gives me a greater purpose!”
“The silver lining in all this is knowing the fans see my heart. They see, I am ready and willing to take on anyone, to represent my country on a historic stage. For me, it’s never been just about the opponent. I’m chasing legacy, something timeless, something bigger than the moment. So for now, I’ll keep grinding, stay patient, and stay faithful. I’m ready to fight on July 4th,” he added.
