In a stunning turn, UFC legend Jon Jones has been cleared of two charges that threatened to drag his name through yet another legal mess — and now his attorney is firing back hard at law enforcement.
Jones had been hit with serious accusations after a February 21 incident in Albuquerque, where police said he fled the scene of a car crash and allegedly left behind a woman in the passenger seat who was intoxicated and — according to cops — partially undressed from the waist down. She claimed Jones was driving and took off on foot.
The allegations were eye-popping and immediately stirred up headlines, especially given Jones’ past run-ins with the law.
But now the charges — one for leaving the scene of an accident and another for allegedly using a phone to intimidate or harass — have been dropped. And Jones’ legal team is not staying quiet.
“From the very beginning, we explained that a woman made a false allegation against Jon in an effort to avoid being arrested for DWI,” said Jones’ attorney, Christopher A. Dodd of Fayerberg Dodd, LLC, on Tuesday. “Unfortunately, the police accepted that claim without properly weighing the facts.”
What changed the game? Cell phone data.
Once the Albuquerque PD finally handed over critical documents, Jones’ phone records showed he wasn’t even close to the scene of the crash. That digital alibi turned the tide, prompting prosecutors to walk away from the case — and putting the spotlight back on how police handled the investigation.
Dodd didn’t mince words: “It is deeply troubling that such critical evidence was disregarded, forcing Jon to endure this ordeal unnecessarily.” He confirmed that his team is launching its own investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
While Jones is no stranger to controversy, this time, it appears he was dragged into chaos not of his own making. With the charges dropped, he walks away legally cleared — but his camp clearly isn’t done asking questions.
