  • UFC Veteran Calls GFL A ‘Scam’ After Launch Canceled

In a sport defined by resilience and comebacks, the Global Fight League’s attempted arrival on the MMA stage has already become a cautionary tale—and the bell hasn’t even rung yet. Poised to make its grand entrance with consecutive events on May 24 and 25 in Los Angeles, GFL instead finds itself embroiled in scandal, confusion, and a growing wave of skepticism that’s sweeping across the combat sports world.

This wasn’t a hiccup. It was a collapse.

A Promising Debut, Derailed

Everything looked the new fight promotion was going to start with a boom. The GFL has assembled a roster of credible fighters, a media push, a two-day event, not amateurism. But behind the curtains, it seems, they had no money and without warning, the entire event slate was canceled, leaving athletes, coaches, and officials shocked.

A Fighter Speaks Out

Former UFC standout Alan Belcher, who was slated to headline GFL 2 against Stuart Austin, took to social media and pulled no punches. “It seems like it’s all just a big, lack of a better word, scam,” he said, underscoring what many insiders had feared. According to Belcher, no fighter received proof of payment, and communication from the promotion was scant at best. “We all got screwed on this one,” he added—a statement that resonates with others affected by the collapse.

Hope or Hype?

GFL founder Darren Owen remains defiant in the face of rising backlash. He claims the organization still plans to debut in June—on the 15th and 16th—but possibly in a jurisdiction with fewer regulatory hurdles than California. That detail alone raises eyebrows. Seeking softer oversight may make logistical sense, but it doesn’t address the central issue: credibility.

Meanwhile, it’s been reported that morale among MMA organizations is low and many are wondering why only one promotion (the UFC) is able to be successful.
